Botanist Bert Studies Blossoms

Boys and Girls,

Please tell me something you are learning about botanists and the study of botany.  You could also post your comment about our Quirkles' experiment and your observations.

  1. Dear Mrs. Koch,
Botanist Bert studies flowers and plants. Do you think Botanist Bert likes all plants? There are some bad plants like poison ivy that can make you itchy.

  2. Hi Mrs. Koch,
Botanist Bert studies flowers, plants and botany. He has a botanical garden of all kinds of different flowers, fruit and veggies and blossoms. He likes begonias. Does Botanist Bert really like all plants, fruits, veggies and flowers because some plants are poisonous, especially poison ivy? I really like the experiment we are doing today. This is a really good day with Quirkles` experiments, even without Mrs. Webb.

  4. Dear Mrs. Koch,
We learned about flowers. Sometimes they change colors. And,
I like flowers, too. Botonist Bert
studies blossoms. Will we do another experiment next week?

  5. Dear Mrs. Koch,
I have had a good time doing the
    experiments. We put blue food
    coloring in water. Then we
put in the white flower. Does Botanist Bert like to plant all of the flowers?

  6. Hi Mrs. Koch,
I have come up with lots of words for bizarre. The experiment was fun. I'm excited because we get to take home part of the project to share with our parents. Are there lots of words for bizarre?

  7. Hi Mrs. Koch,
I like the Quirkles' experiments. I learned that a botanist studies plants. Why are the experiments so fun for kids?

  10. Hi Zachary,
You did an excellent job posting your comment. I love how elaborative you are! I think (but it is totally my own opinion) Botanist Bert would love all kinds of plants. If plants are his passion, I would think he would like the unique plants best of all. Plants like a venus fly trap or a raffesia flower or even poison ivy are very unusual. If I were him, I would be very curious about those kinds of plants. What do you think?

  11. dear Mrs Kooch it is fun to do the experuments.
if you put a flower in the water that has red
food curring then it will have red dots.

  12. Caleb, I don't think that experiements are fun just for kids. In my job, I work with lots and lots of adults who do experiments all day as their job. Some are trying to find cures for cancer or ways to help people stop smoking. I think experiments are something anyone - at any age - can do and enjoy.

Does anyone else think that they will continue to enjoy experiments as they get older?

  13. Hi Camila,
I don't think we will be doing any other experiments with flowers, but I'm sure there are others you could do. Talk to me about it next week and I'll tell you a cool one you can do with a cereal box and a bean plant. Have a great 3 day weekend!

  14. Hi Sara,

I am so glad you have joined our class! Actually, I am planning on studying another Quirkle next week. She is Colorful Caroline and we will have two experiments to do with her. They are exciting and also something you can do at home with your family. Have a great 3 day weekend and I will look forward to seeing you next week!

  15. Hi Cora,

I think he probably does like all kinds of flowers and plants. Since bizarre was one of his words, I would think he'd like strange kinds of plants. Do you have a favorite flower or plant? I like allium the best. They are shaped like a purple puff ball and when the flower dies, there is a sparkler shaped stem of long twigs left. They are very cool. Enjoy your long weekend, Cora.

  16. Hi Abby,
I have been thinking about you today. Here are some of the words I've been thinking of for "bizarre."
    curious
    eccentric
    extraordinary
    fantastic
    freakish
    grotesque
    kooky
    odd
    off the wall
    offbeat
    peculiar
    queer
    unusual
    way-out
    weird
Are you still thinking of words? Have a fun 3 day weekend.

  17. Hi Caleb,
I agree with your mom. Experiments are for everyone and they are fun because they let us discover new information. It is an exciting way to learn and better than just listening to a teacher tell you the facts. I hope you have a great 3 day weekend.

  18. Hi Ella,
I'm glad you are apart of our class. We had to write a lot this week and you really hung in there. Next week, we will do two cool experiments with Colorful Caroline. I have some blue hydrangeas in my yard. What is your favorite flower?

  19. Dear Ms. Koch,
I think I'll like experiments as I get older, but as I get older, things will change, so I might not get to do them very often.

When I'm a geologist, I'll do experiments with rocks. I'll experiment with how water flows into rocks.

I know that water can flow under the rock. As more water gets through, it pushes through the rock. This makes things like the Grand Canyon or the Rock Bridge in Columbia, MO that I saw on vacation.

I hope you have a nice three day weekend. I'm going to Halloween bonfire with my cousins.

  20. Hi Caleb,
You are doing a fantastic job on your quality comments! I love reading what you write. I think cooking is a lot like conducting experiments. I am always changing the recipes around and trying new things. When you are a geologist, I would like to visit with you. I love rocks. The bigger the better. I keep asking for a boulder for Christmas. I want to put it in my back yard or maybe a flower bed. My husband says, "Why can't you just ask for jewelry?" My favorite rocks are quartz , granite and feldspar. What kind of stones do you like?

  21. Hi Mrs. Koch,

My friend W (His name is Caleb, too, so we have nicknames) gave me a rock collection for my birthday. These are my favorite rocks: pumice, obsidian, and anthracite coal. I like how pumice feels and looks. It doesn't really feel like a rock; it's more like a sponge. Anthracite coal is really shiny and dark. Obsidian is also shiny and dark. It is also smooth.
